Market Tavern

I went to see this band because I know one of the members. I didn't think I knew many of the songs from these threee bands, but am always game to try different music. I was pleased at how many of the songs I did know, I just hadn't known I did. I was also impressed with the lead guitarist, and the drummer. There were some very impressive widdly bits. Definitely a band I'd go and see again.

This review could be seen as being a wee bit biased, as bassist Steve C is a mate of mine, but I'm gonna try and be as objective as I can. Talking to some of the guys, there were some definite first-night jitters before they kicked off (this was their first ever gig with this line-up). This, however, did not show in the music, which was blasted out confidently and clearly. I was never hugely into Free or The Cream, and know only bits and pieces of Zeppelin, but I had a great time. I was especially impressed with guitarist Paul's screaming solos, which were worthy of any of the great guitar heroes. As a band, they played with near-perfect synchronicity, with bassist Steve C and drummer Phil holding a solid and consistent rhythm. That may sound like faint praise, but it is one of the hardest aspects of playing as a group and it was done well. Vocalist Steve T had perhaps the hardest job, reproducing the trademark sounds of three very widely-known singers. His performance was outstanding, delivering the lyrics without being overshadowed by their original performers. And, Steve - those Bose tweeters did the business!

As an ardent lover of Led Zeppelin, Free and Cream, I felt that the Market Tavern in Chester le Street had to be the place to be on Friday 23rd October 2009. You could argue that this review could be seen as being biased towards the band as the bass player and lead guitarist are work colleagues of mine. However this should not deter any punters from going to see this band in the future. They capture the sound and feel of these three supergroups using thier experience, talent and knowledge to produce an authentic performance. Vocalist Stevie T delivered his vocal styles with confidence and feel, adapting competently to suit the phrasing and style of each bands vocalist. Lead guitarist Paul Layfield consistently delivered the riffs and licks, note for note, in fact during Heartbreaker the solo break originally created by Jimmy Page oozed faultlessly right up to the point where the guitar hangs, feeds back and then breaks into the next riff. Unfortunately Mr Page did not perform on the night as expected, however Paul made up for his absence. Bassman Steve Clark concentrated with precision, constantly keeping it together with some fine fingerwork, most prominently during the Free songs, replicating Andy Frasers busy, unorthodox bass playing style. Drummer Phil worked tirelessly in the backround with "No Frills", keeping his head down, producing a tireless, hardworking performance allowing his fellow band members to deliver the goods. Unfortunately I had to leave before the end, however The Cestrians informed me that, many more punters arrived towards the end and a good night was had by all. Led, Free, Cream at no cost and a great treat, not to be missed!!
